Reflections of Becoming, a mirrored female torso sculpture2023 · Original workReflections of BecomingView piece +

The story within the work

I began this sculpture when I learned I was pregnant with Wylder.

Its mirrored form reflects more than light. To me, it holds a decade-long journey of self-reflection, growth and healing. Each mirrored tile represents a moment in a life… singular, unrepeatable and necessary. I am grateful for every one. Together, they carried me to the beauty of the here and now, a place I finally know how to appreciate and love.

Deer John, a human torso sculpture with a real deer skull2015 · Unique workDeer JohnView piece +

The story within the work

Deer John was the first sculpture I created for the Animalistic collection, and my goodbye in physical form.

Traditionally, a Dear John letter marks the end of a relationship. This became mine: a quiet declaration that I was leaving what was no longer healthy and choosing myself without needing to explain every detail. Some endings are not failures. They are the beginning of returning to yourself.

Domesticated, a reclining female figure with a serval skullUnique workDomesticatedView piece +

The story within the work

Domesticated reflects a time when comfort began to feel like confinement.

She rests like a house cat… contained, familiar and made small enough to belong… while the serval skull remembers the wildness that once moved through her. The piece holds the tension between the life we learn to accept and the untamed self that refuses to disappear.

Part of the Animalistic collection, Domesticated marks the moment before return: the realization that the feral self was never gone. She was only sleeping.

The story within the work

Man’s Best Friend examines the difference between devotion and obedience.

In a relationship that asked for loyalty without equality, I began to feel less like a partner and more like a possession… expected to sit, stay and shape myself around someone else’s command.

Part of the Animalistic collection, this piece refuses to confuse control with love. True partnership does not ask one person to become smaller, quieter or owned. Love meets us as equals.

Rise Above, a black female figure lifting a turtle shell overhead2018 · Original workRise AboveView piece +

The story within the work

Rise Above is a reminder that protection does not have to become confinement.

Held high above her head, the turtle shell becomes both shelter and guide… a roof against the storm and a symbol of the ancient wisdom we carry within. She stands in the noise without belonging to it, choosing steadiness over reaction and her own light over the darkness around her.

Part of the Animalistic collection, Rise Above is not about escaping chaos. It is about moving through it with discernment, refusing to be pulled beneath it and remembering that even in the storm, we can remain rooted in who we are.

Illegal, a female figure with an alien skull and raised fingers2017 · Unique workIllegalView piece +

The story within the work

Illegal was born from the experience of being told I did not belong.

Created from a time when my own right to remain in a country felt uncertain, the alien skull transforms the language of otherness into power. Her raised fingers are an unapologetic refusal to surrender… a message to every person, system and circumstance that tried to diminish me or break my spirit.

Part of the Animalistic collection, Illegal is a reclamation of identity. What was meant to make her feel foreign becomes her crown. What was meant to silence her becomes a gesture of survival, sovereignty and self-possession: I am still here, and I belong to myself.

Return to the Wild, a black female figure crowned with an animal skullSoldReturn to the WildView piece +

The story within the work

Return to the Wild is a reclamation of instinct.

Crowned with an animal skull and moving close to the earth, she is neither hiding nor asking permission. Her posture holds both vulnerability and readiness… the body remembering the intelligence it carried before it learned to make itself smaller.

Part of the Animalistic collection, Return to the Wild marks the moment survival becomes sovereignty. She is not becoming less human. She is returning to the untamed wisdom that was always hers.

Sculptor Tanya Ragir smiling in her studio with her artwork behind her
Tanya Ragir in her studio · Image via Saatchi Art

In loving memory · December 29, 2023

For Tanya.

Tanya Ragir opened an entirely new sculpture class so I could participate. She did not have to, and that act of generosity changed the course of my life. She gave me a safe place to land, listened to me and helped me discover a passion that became part of my healing.

Tanya, thank you for seeing me, making room for me and quite literally saving my soul. Everything I create carries something from the door you opened.
With love, Sonni
